Itinerary (L)
At 8.00 am you will be picked up for a sightseeing tour in Mombasa, known as the 2nd capital of Kenya. The roundtrip starts at Mama Ngina Drive right next to the arrival point of the ferry. On your way to “Fort Jesus” you pass by the popular Florida Night Club and Oceanic Hotel, one of the oldest hotels in Mombasa. Located right at the entrance of the harbour, “Fort Jesus” was originally built in 1593 by the Portuguese as a fort to protect from the Arabic. The Portuguese and Arabic rivalled for supremacy in Africa battling along the East African Coast. Today the fort attracts the public as a museum providing impressive insights into the history of the coastal region of East Africa. You will then visit the harbour with its numerous sailing ships called “Dhaus”, which are still being used for work-related purposes in the coastal regions of East Africa. Compared to the older Dhaus the modern ones are additionally equipped with a motor.
Your tour continues in the heart of Mombasa, the arabic-influenced Old Town. A mere labyrinth of alleys awaits you with hand carved doors, jewelery work and other shops with various african handicraft. Next you will visit a Hindu Temple, the “Tusks”, which is known as a popular monument with enormous elephant tusks.
Then you will take a short drive through the center of the town, and through the Makupa course way drive to Mombasa’s Western Mainland. There you can closely watch the manufacture of various wood carvings made by some of the 1000 members of the Akamba Craftwork Association. As common in Africa you can now bargain for a souvenir to your heart’s content!
After the tour you will be brought back to your hotel around 2.00 pm.

Best Weather

March, April and May (Peak of the Wet season)

Dry Season (June to October) – Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

  • Weather: These months are cooler and drier, which makes wildlife easier to spot as animals gather around water sources.
  • Great Migration: This is the peak of the wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara, especially between July and October. This is a highlight for many visitors.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Since vegetation is less dense, animals are more visible in the open savannah, and predators are more active, making this the best time for general game viewing.
  • Temperatures: Daytime temperatures are usually mild, ranging from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), with cooler mornings and evenings.

2. Short Rainy Season (November to December)

  • Weather: Occasional short rains, usually in the form of afternoon showers, but still lots of sunshine.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The rains can make animals a bit harder to spot, but it’s a quieter time to visit, and many areas are lush and green, which offers a different perspective.
  • Benefits: Fewer tourists, and some safari lodges and camps offer lower rates during this season.
  • Temperatures: Temperatures can range between 20°C and 28°C (68°F to 82°F).

3. Long Rainy Season (March to May) – Low Season

  • Weather: This is the wettest period in Kenya, with frequent and intense rains, making some roads difficult to travel, especially in remote areas.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The rain can create a more challenging safari experience as animals tend to spread out more and are harder to spot. However, birdwatching is excellent during this time as many migratory birds are in Kenya.
  • Benefits: The rainy season is the least crowded time of year, and many lodges offer significant discounts, which can make for a more budget-friendly trip.
  • Temperatures: Similar to the short rains, temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F).

4. Shoulder Season (January to February)

  • Weather: This is generally a dry period, with warm to hot temperatures and little rainfall. It’s often considered one of the best times for safaris.
  • Wildlife Viewing: During this period, game viewing is excellent as animals gather around water sources. The landscapes are still lush and green from the rainy season, but the grass is shorter, making wildlife spotting easier.
  • Temperatures: This is the hottest time of year, with temperatures averaging between 25°C and 30°C (77°F to 86°F).
