Kenya safari and Diani beach - Issac helped with the perfect planning and Frank was an amazing tour guide and driver. We did 9 day safari and 4 days Diani beach. Our three kids (tweens/teens)... read more loved it too. Very good value and highly recommend
July 17, 2023We have taken many trips around the world mostly using travel agencies. However, we decided to try and hire someone locally this time around which was daunting and a bit... read more scary. After much research online, we narrowed down our options to a handful of companies and finally decided on "Best Memory Safaris' mainly because of high reviews at first and later because it was so easy to tailor the trip to our needs and wants, the highly rated accommodations and the excellent customer service we received from Issac. I am so glad we made this choice!
From our pickup at the airport at 5:00AM on day #1 to our drop off after 12 days of safaris went without a hitch and was probably one of the best trip we have made. The experience was above and beyond what we expected. The accommodations were beautiful, clean, safe and we were always met with friendly staff and the food was amazing.
One of the best parts of the trip was our guide Michael without whom I am not sure we would have seen the wildlife we saw and experienced numerous awe inspiring moments almost every single day. We never once felt rushed or unsafe during the trip. Michael was an excellent safe driver which we were thankful for after seeing some drivers racing by us!! He knew the ins and outs of all the six parks we visited and has excellent knowledge of the wildlife.
We experienced amazing moments such as a pride of lionesses with their cubs lazing around, two lionesses sleeping while the cubs played in a nearby bush, three male Lions probably guarding their pride, a mating couple just next to our jeep etc etc. We even experienced a Lion guarding his overnight hunt which was a buffalo and a wildebeest!! It was amazing to see herds of beautiful elephant families passing right by us, behind our accommodations (with electric fences) etc etc almost daily. We saw two types of rhinoceros with their families, different types of giraffes, buffalos, hippos, antelopes, flamingos, pelicans and other birds, we saw one beautiful cheetah walking in the savannah, but the most amazing of all was when we saw a cheetah kill towards the end of our trip. We saw it lay eyes on its prey a poor dik-dik, lay in wait for it, capture it and enjoy its meal!! Michael somehow hear about this cheetah sighting and got us there in time to see it all!! Asante Sana Michael.
Almost forgot the beautiful people of Kenya we met along the way including the two Maasai bomas. Unforgetable trip!
Posting some pictures in case you think this is too good to be true (sorry, trip advisor says the file is too large to upload my pictures, tried a few times)

Just a little background information. My wife Jane was born in Nairobi in 1953, the 3rd child of a canny Scotsman and a gentile English lady who had farmed an estate in Rongai, just north of Nairobi. Until the age of 7, when the family returned to the UK, Kenya had been all she had ever known. She spoke more Swahili than English, her main friends were the farm workers and their families, and her fondness for the country has endured over the years.
In 2014, now aged 60, we visited Kenya for the first time since she was 7, and a family group of 6 of us set out to discover what had become of the farm, to visit the church that her mum had helped to build, and to visit a conservation on the Masai Mara, and to have some R&R in a resort in Zanzibar. A very successful trip that had us promising to return.
Roll forward to mid 2022, having endured Brexit, and Covid lockdown, Kenya was calling again, and an e-mail from an English ex-pat still living in Kenya came up with a recommendation for Isaac and Best Memory Safaris, so the adventure began.
Last time, we mostly flew between the destinations as we only had a two-week holiday, and felt that we missed out on seeing a lot of real Africa, so this time we wanted to go overland, to see more of the character and cultures, and to work our way to the coast via a number of wild life conservation areas. Our trip took us through Amboseli, staying for 2 nights at Kibo Safari Camp, where opening the flap of our luxury tent gave us an uninterrupted view of Kilimanjaro. Then to Ziwani Camp in Tsavo Park West, with its dam with hippos and crocodiles just metres away from our accommodation. On to Tsavo East, staying at Ashnil Aruba Lodge where the restaurant overlooked the lit waterhole, visited by all sorts of wildlife – constantly changing. There was such a lot to see – a highlight was standing in our vehicle, quite literally just metres of 7 lions, who sat on both sides of the track while we took some brilliant photos. The whole safari experience was made so much more interesting by Anthony, our guide, whose contributions and knowledge of the species, the terrain and his obvious national pride gave us such a good insight. He was like a guide, a wildlife expert, a history teacher and a storyteller, all rolled into one!
Then, leaving the parks behind, it was time to travel to the coast, where we had been booked into the Diani Sea Resort. With nothing negative to report, it was a very pleasant, comfortable resort, with good, friendly service - perfectly acceptable for our holiday, as, I’m quite sure, would have been the case with many of the similar resorts along that long stretch of Tiwi Beach with its white sands and warm Indian Sea, camels and hawkers. In case that sounds ominous, it has to be said that the hawkers were invariably friendly and polite, and unlike some other places we have been to, were not aggressive or persistent, and moved on with a smile. All in all, a great place to relax and unwind. But we did also have a mission in mind!
Back in the 1950’s, when the family farmed in Kenya, they used to come to the Diani Beach area, where they had a holiday house right next to the beach. When they left, it was sold, but over the years, various family groups had tried, and failed, to rediscover the exact location of the house, so this time it was our turn to investigate the location. Our safari driver, Anthony had volunteered to help, and once again he did not fail us. It took a lot of exploring and talking to local people, and ended up with us giving a lift to a family of 6, (mother and 5 children) who led us to the exact spot. A little bittersweet because the house was now a ruined shell, but still recognisable from old pictures. But what a feeling to walk down the stone steps and set foot on a deserted beach that had been her playground nearly 70 years earlier. Pure Magic.
So, more of a personal story than a holiday review, but all made possible by the care and attention to detail that Isaac and Best Memory Safaris put into making our holiday one that will stay with us forever. Without a second’s hesitation we would recommend talking to this company if you are planning to visit Kenya. They have all of the so-important local knowledge and the experience to organise and deliver a trip tailored to your requirements. Isaac makes it happen - all you need to do is turn up – and enjoy it!
