At 8.00 am you will be picked up for a sightseeing tour in Mombasa. The roundtrip starts at Mama Ngina drive right next to the arrival point of the ferry. On your way to “Fort Jesus” you pass by the popular Florida Night Club and Oceanic Hotel (one of the oldest hotels in Mombasa) Located right at the entrance of the harbour, “Fort Jesus” was originally built in 1593 by the Portuguese as a fort to protect from the Arabic. The Portuguese and Arabic rivalled for supremacy in Africa battling along the East African Coast. Today the fort attracts the public as a museum providing impressive insights into the history of the coastal region of East Africa. You will then visit the harbour with its numerous sailing ships called “Dhows”, which are still being used for work-related purposes in the coastal regions of East Africa. Compared to the older Dhows the modern ones are additionally equipped with a motor. Your tour continues in the heart of Mombasa, the arabic-influenced Old Town. A mere labyrinth of alleys awaits you with hand carved doors, juwelry work and other shops with various african handicraft. Next you will visit a Hindu Temple, the “Tusks”, which is known as a popular monument with enormous elephant tusks. There you can closely watch the manufacture of various wood carvings made by some of the 1000 members of the Akamba Craftwork Association. As common in Africa you can now bargain for a souvenir to your heart’s content!
Lunch will be served in one of the city’s hotels. Thereafter we take you on a short drive to the north coast of Mombasa, where you can visit “Baobab Rock craft”, a small factory that is famous for its manufacture of unique handicraft like polished fossils and stones including bookends, solitaire games etc. The next location of the tour is Haller-Park (BaobabAdventures), which was once known for its usage as a stone pit for the production of Bamburi Cement. Today it became popular as an interesting place for leisure and recreation purposes, with its forest, nature trails, wild reserves and breeds of crocodiles and fish. The nature trails are famous worldwide leading past many different wildlife species such as hippos, antelopes, giraffes, birds and reptiles like snakes, giant turtles and crocodiles. Therefore Haller Park gives you a good chance to experience a kind of short safari. “Baobab Adventures” can be viewed as a prime example for a reasonable form of ecotourism, as it has been turned from a mere area of stone pits into a tropic paradise with a diverse flora and fauna. The tour concludes with the feed of various animals living in the park. We then take you back to your hotel in the late evening.
