The Karen Blixen Museum is a must-visit historical and cultural landmark located in the tranquil suburb of Karen in Nairobi, Kenya. It was the former home of Karen Blixen, the renowned Danish author best known for her memoir, Out of Africa, which recounts her life in Kenya during the early 20th century. The museum offers visitors a chance to explore the life and legacy of this famous author, her connection to Kenya, and the fascinating history of her farm.

Your Safari Starts: A Journey through Kenya’s Wilderness

As your safari begins, you’re welcomed by the fresh morning air, the sounds of birds and distant wildlife, and the sight of a vast African landscape stretching before you.

A Short tour to the home of the pioneer coffee farmer, Karen Blixen – of “Out of Africa” fame, is now preserved as a museum. A visit to this museum provides an opportunity to step back in time and gain an insight into this remarkable woman’s life. Views of the Ngong Hills can be admired from the beautifully landscaped gardens of the museum.
The Karen Blixen museum is one of a number of very interesting regional museums and archeological and prehistoric sites of the National museums of Kenya, and it continues to be an immensely popular tourist attraction with the same words ‘ I dreamt of Africa’

Best Weather

March, April and May (Peak of the Wet season)

Dry Season (June to October) – Best Time for Wildlife Viewing

  • Weather: These months are cooler and drier, which makes wildlife easier to spot as animals gather around water sources.
  • Great Migration: This is the peak of the wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara, especially between July and October. This is a highlight for many visitors.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Since vegetation is less dense, animals are more visible in the open savannah, and predators are more active, making this the best time for general game viewing.
  • Temperatures: Daytime temperatures are usually mild, ranging from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), with cooler mornings and evenings.

2. Short Rainy Season (November to December)

  • Weather: Occasional short rains, usually in the form of afternoon showers, but still lots of sunshine.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The rains can make animals a bit harder to spot, but it’s a quieter time to visit, and many areas are lush and green, which offers a different perspective.
  • Benefits: Fewer tourists, and some safari lodges and camps offer lower rates during this season.
  • Temperatures: Temperatures can range between 20°C and 28°C (68°F to 82°F).

3. Long Rainy Season (March to May) – Low Season

  • Weather: This is the wettest period in Kenya, with frequent and intense rains, making some roads difficult to travel, especially in remote areas.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The rain can create a more challenging safari experience as animals tend to spread out more and are harder to spot. However, birdwatching is excellent during this time as many migratory birds are in Kenya.
  • Benefits: The rainy season is the least crowded time of year, and many lodges offer significant discounts, which can make for a more budget-friendly trip.
  • Temperatures: Similar to the short rains, temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F).

4. Shoulder Season (January to February)

  • Weather: This is generally a dry period, with warm to hot temperatures and little rainfall. It’s often considered one of the best times for safaris.
  • Wildlife Viewing: During this period, game viewing is excellent as animals gather around water sources. The landscapes are still lush and green from the rainy season, but the grass is shorter, making wildlife spotting easier.
  • Temperatures: This is the hottest time of year, with temperatures averaging between 25°C and 30°C (77°F to 86°F).
